Dr. Adam Drewnoski, Director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington, has determined that “foods produced from subsidized crops, such as French fries and soda, cost about five times less per calorie than unsubsidized foods, such as broccoli and fruit juices.”

This savings is significant because fast food is the cheapest food available on the market thanks to the government subsidizing the production of soybean oil and high fructose corn syrup, two ingredients commonly found in fattening foods ranging from soft drinks to cheeseburgers to potato chips. If you avoid fast food and opt for healthy alternatives, I applaud your efforts, but the price per meal will dramatically go up.

Last year, Dr. Drewnowski led a study, published in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association, comparing the prices of 370 foods sold at supermarkets in the Seattle area. The study showed that “energy dense” junk foods, which pack the most calories and fewest nutrients per gram, were far less expensive than nutrient-rich, lower-calorie foods like fruits and vegetables.

The prices of the most healthful foods surged 19.5% over the two-year study period, while the junk food prices dropped 1.8%.

Even in a healthy food comparison, our $5.00 per high antioxidant meal replacement shake is a better value. A recent Center for Disease Control published study indicates that the United States spends close to $150 billion on obesity, about the same as smoking. If you’re a Medicare recipient, that number goes up because their obesity was often coupled with multiple co-morbidities such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis, cardiovascular disease or stroke.

How much does America spend for each obese person? A weight loss organization called Wellspring recently completed a study that followed overall lifetime obesity costs for a person from the age of 18 until death. The results showed that if you track every single American who is currently overweight and added up the costs; it would come to a whopping combined figure of $297,951,964,800! That’s $532,057.08 per obese American.

  • How inexpensive would our shake be when you consider its health producing benefits?
  • What dollar amount would people put on a product that takes the burden of weight off their shoulders – and bellies – and helps them feel good about themselves physically, mentally and emotionally?
